Should you get an ISBN for your books

As of this posting Apple requires you to have an ISBN for each ebook sold through its online store. Some other smaller ebook retailers require you to have one as well.

However, Amazon's Kindle the largest ebook reseller doesn't require you to have an ISBN for your ebook. It's not required that you have an ISBN for your printed books. If you're interested in having your printed book as retail ready friendly as possible you'd want to have an ISBN.

Amazon's Kindle probably doesn't require an ISBN, because they were looking at mass domination of the ebook market and realized the less barriers to entry for independent authors an publishers the more product they'd have available to sell in a relatively short time.

Apparently, Kindle got it right as they currently dominate the ebook market and are poised to continue that dominance for the foreseeable future.
