Self Publishing - How Many Pages Should Your Book Have

How many pages should your self published book have?

One indicator is to look at best selling and/or popular books in your genre to get an idea for there page length.

Put yourself in the consumers shoes and ask yourself if you were browsing books in a similar genre and both were priced the same, but one seemed to offer more information which would you most likely purchase?

It has been my experience that there are a number of factors that contribute to a book selling or not selling. One of those factors is page count. Other factors include in no particular order your branding, marketing and promotions campaign, you ability to speak in front of people on a regular basis, your media hype machine (publicity), recommendations/endorsements from respected people in your genre, your burning desire, practical written plan and daily execution of that plan.

Self Publishing Tips to Sell

Self publishing tips to sell more books.

A friend and I were talking and he mentioned that he participated in a teleseminar and the host was sharing information he gathered from a self-publishing printer. The host asked the printer what is the average number of books sold by self-published authors. The printer replied 200 books. Many books retail between $10 and $20.

If you sell 200 books at $20/book you'll generate $4,000 U.S. Dollars. If you were generating $4,000 per month, was single with no dependents and not living in a major U.S. City you could make a decent living for yourself, but to only sell 200 books and earn $4,000 over the life of your book is a bit depressing from a business model standpoint. However if you've written and published your book for some other sentimental reason congrats you've hit the jackpot my friend.

For writers and self-published authors seeking to sell more books and make more money we need to focus on branding, marketing, promoting, publicizing and advertising ourselves and our books. One of the main reasons that your books may not be selling is because you've not properly identified your target market (book buyers).

If I wrote novels I'd seek out book clubs to pitch my book to. I'd come up with some qualifiers as not to waste my time or theirs (the book club). I'd forward one to three review copies of my books to the books club with a cover letter and order form should the club decide to order books. Any promotional material and marketing collateral I had would be included with the package. All you'd need is a few book clubs to bite (buy) and you're off and going.

In the absence of something you should create something. If there are no book clubs near your city you could start one. The local coffee shop, public library or civic center may be used as a neutral meeting location. In addition, to self-publishing your paperback or softcover book you'll want to resell your product as an ebook. Since, you're book is already in electronic form it wouldn't take much for you to get up an running. On make money self-publishing you'll find full details on self-publishing your own ebook.

Self Publishing - Marketing Wisdom

Self-publishing marketing wisdom to help you better promote your book.

Traditional marketing wisdom teaches us that it takes about seven (7) impressions before people respond to an advertisement or marketing materials. This means they must hear, touch, taste, smell, see or otherwise experience something before they buy. If we hold that to be true it's safe to assume that if you were to enter a new market without any set up you are doomed to fail miserably for the most part, because most the people at the book expo or trade show would only have heard about you and your book for the first time. There are exceptions to the rule. For instance, if you are relentless in your efforts during the event you may be able to change your sell to impression conversion rate. In an attempt not to use to much jargon here are some solutions.

1) Prior to attending an event use social networking to tap into the local market. Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, etc.

2) Prior to going to an event create video and send it out to people using your social network platform

3) Hire a publicists or pr firm in the local market you're going to in an effort to get press. Ideally this should be done 6 to 9 months for print media. Obviously online media needs less time.

4) Do your on publicity or pr work informing the local market of your arrival and where you'll be signing books.

5) KNOW THIS: Branding, marketing, promotions, advertising and publicity is a 24/7 activity. If you're on the road traveling leave flyers in the gas station & restaurant in route. You never know who may see your material. I often leave flyers vividly displayed right at the gas pump. It works!

6) If you're on the plane give out flyers and business cards, etc. while waiting to board and while on board the plane. Every situation is an opportunity to sell many books.

Self Publishing Residual Income

Self-publishing your own book is one of the many ways you may earn residual income from your intellectual property. With the ability to quickly and inexpensively create your own ebook there's no reason you shouldn't be in position to make money online self-publishing.

I had the opportunity to do a book signing with a young lady. She told me she had printed 1,000 books and was happy that she had sold nearly all of them and that she was preparing to write her second book. I said great how soon before you go to press to get more of your books that are nearly sold out. Her response "I hadn't thought about reprinting." WHAT, I replied have you ever considered that their are billions of people on earth. Your book is your intellectual property that should be reprinted and packaged as many times as the market will bear.

These books we write and publish I told her help set us up for residual/passive income that may be passed to future generations. This is how we continue to build our legacies I suggested. After that she said she would reprint her first book.

My point is many times we stop before we have begun with no fought of anyone or anything but ourselves.

Self Publishing - Creative Imagination

When asking many writers what's prohibiting them from publishing their own book they'll often site money as their reason. More often than not when I have time to speak with them directly I find money isn't what's stopping them at all. In fact, it's safe to say that when you really desire to publish your book you'll find a way to make it so.

Surely, you remember a time when someone told you no and yet that didn't stop you from obtaining what you had a desire to obtain. Publishing your own book is no less different. In fact, you have the memory and wisdom of going through the spiritual, mental and practical conditioning to position yourself to get what you want if your desire is to truly publish your book.

Money has made many of us unable to tap into our creative imagination. Even before money it has been my experience that you need to have three things in order to succeed in most cases.

You Need:

A Burning Desire
A Practical Plan -preferably written
Daily Execution of your plan

Through your experience you too have found that while money may be used it isn't the thing that most will separate those who succeed and those who fail. After all, it's reported that Thomas Edison failed 10,000 times before getting the light bulb right. When asked why did you keep on keeping on after failing 10,000 times, he replied I figured if I found all the ways that wouldn't work I was bound to find the way that would because I would have found all the wrong answers and the only answer left would be the right one.
